Have you noticed the spiral shaped bulbs that are now a mainstay in most big-box retailers and stores around the country? Perhaps you have even tried out these new light bulbs in your own home. But how do they different from the classic incandescent variety that you have been using in your own home? There are three basic bulb types on the market today – incandescent, halogen, and compact fluorescent. Which is best? Which should you choose? Which is more aesthetically appealing? Which is a green, energy saving option? Let’s break it down!
• Incandescent. These options are the standard fare that have been in use for years and years (and years). These little guys are literally on their way out, at least in the U.S., as laws have been enacted that will phase them out of circulation by the year 2014. The reason? They are not efficient energy wise. Nonetheless, the incandescent classic casts a cozy glow and is great for those times when you want to spotlight the true hue of a lamp shade. But you better get them by 2014 — when they will be gone forever.
• Halogen. The halogen option provides up to thirty percent more energy efficiency than their incandescent counterparts. They emit a light that is "white" and that is beautiful in kitchens, offices, and some types of lamps. The halogen option burns at a high temperature, so keep that in mind and make sure that the lamp and shade that you use can withstand halogen use.
• Compact fluorescent. CFLs are those spiral shaped options that were mentioned above, although they are available in other shapes as well (including the traditional “bulb” shape). CFLs last much longer than other types and use less energy. They emit a cold light, so they are best used behind a shade to look less harsh. When handling CFL varieties, be sure to use care as they are filled with mercury.
