The foyer area of the home is one of the most important spaces in your home — but it is often overlooked. In reality, the choices you make to illuminate the foyer are crucial; after all, everyone who comes through your home will see this space. You can make or break your first impression with this space. And it is also used to set the tone for what lies beyond…the rest of the house! For these reasons, it is vital that you select the best lighting for this space. The tips that follow will go a long way towards assisting you in your goals:
• Select a fixture for this space that is based on how high your ceiling is. If the ceiling is low, then choose an inverted pendants for the space. This will allow light to bounce up instead of bouncing out and down. With a vaulted or other type of higher ceiling, the luminaire that is selected should have a downward direction that will glow the space all the way up to the ceiling.
• Choose a wall mirror to complement your fixture choice in the entry space. This will also work to brighten up the space. Be cautious with its placement, however, since the goal is to avoid glare from both interior and natural lights that might be streaming in from outside.
• Supplement illumination in this space with a table lamp strategically positioned on a console table or other table. This lamp can be positioned below a mirror so that you can use the power of the mirror to create an even lighter effect in the space.
• For a particularly dark entrance, you might also think of installing wall sconces. These fixtures can work to bring the space a brighter look while adding a layer of illumination.
