Pendant Lighting — How to Make a Stylish Home

Pendant lighting is a great addition to any modern home. This is a single or more often multiple arrangement of illumination that hang from the ceiling through a rod or a wire. With the various designs available, they are easy to match with any room decor. They can be used both for task and ambient illumination. Big and traditional chandeliers are pushed to the side with the modern and more versatile hanging versions of these installations. To effectively use them in making a stylish home, there are a few things to consider.

  • They are easily spotted because of their position in a room. Unlike recessed illumination that is almost inconspicuous, these pieces make a fashion statement in the overall look of your room. Choose a design that matches your room design and go for something that you will be happy to keep for a long time. Some designs go passe easily and you would not want to change them in the next couple of years. Pick something that will keep you pleased for a longer time.

  • Some have translucent shades while some have solid. Translucent shades can cast illumination in all directions and can give a general glow to the area. The area thus illuminated is enhanced by it being transfused all over. illumination with solid shades gives off a beam right beneath the shade and therefore concentrates on one spot only. This is especially useful for task illumination. In picking out a type of design, always consider the space that you want to be enhanced. The colors, shapes, metals and the harmony of the room should come first in your considerations. You would not want your highly visible hanging illumination to look out of place in the area you placed it in.

  • The length of the rod or wire it hangs from is also important. You should consider the amount of traffic in the area. If it obstructs movement, get one with a shorter rod. Some hang on wires and can be easily adjusted to the height it is hung. The metal rods from which it will be hung can also be cut but make sure to consult a professional about these adjustments. Though there is no general rule for how low a piece can hang, just make sure that aside from being stylish, it is also practical and functional.

  • Pedant lights can have line voltage fixtures or low voltage ones. Line voltage fixtures come less expensive because you won't be paying for a transformer. On the other hand, low voltage ones use smaller bulbs and can be more versatile style-wise. In saving energy, the bulbs are also important. Generally, LED (light emitting diodes) and fluorescent bulbs consume less electricity than incandescent ones. LED is the most efficient but is also the most expensive of the three. But if you are looking at the savings in the long run, LED lights could be a good choice.
